October 2004
Artist: Jihad Muhammad
Title: "Oasis"
Label: Iwanai Music CD-R (IW 005)
Year: 2004
This fifth release off of Toronto-based Iwanai Music
(and follow-up release to the gorgeous "Esperanza" by
John Kumahara & Martino) showcases the fine talent of
New Jersey's Jihad Muhammad. "Oasis" is an up-tempo,
dancefloor-friendly instrumental that seamlessly fuses
saxophone, conga and steel drums. The final product is
a piece that will definitely get the floor shaking.
The main mix and dub version are both useful,
especially for DJ's who like to ride their mixes.
As with his previous release on Iwanai ("NJ Groove"
-IW003), Jihad proves that his productions are up to
par with house heavy weights Frankie Valentine, Boyd
Jarvis and Antonio Ocasio, amongst others. Blaze's
Josh Milan (aka Alexander Hope) called him "house
music rookie of the year", and I can see why. Look out
for more musical productions by Jihad Muhammad, as
well as more goodies off of Iwanai Music.
Artist: 280 West feat. Diamond Temple
Title: "Fly"
Label: Phuture Sole CD-R (PS-005)
Year: 2004
This lush production by 280 West (aka Mark Mendoza)
features the stellar vocals of Diamond Temple, with
sweet background vocals provided by none other than
Kenny Bobien. This cut (which features a main mix,
instrumental and reprise) definitely travels into the
realms of mellow, up-lifting house music. The
wonderful skills of William Galison shine on the
harmonica, which is featured throughout this 10 minute
journey. And just when you thought that it couldn't
get better, an organ solo by Rob Temple sends the
listener (and dancer) over the top.
One of my favourite new labels, Phuture Sole has done
it again. Looking forward to hearing more music from
this new kid on the block. You should equally be on
the lookout for remixes of "Fly" by the mighty Blaze
and Joe Claussell.
